Information
Idea
The singing classes are open to everyone, especially those who don’t consider themselves singers. We learn traditional songs from various cultures, using methods that don’t require musical education to encourage “non-professionals” to sing. We approach singing in a non-stage-oriented way. The primary value of our workshops is enjoyment—primarily for the performers, but also for the audience. We sing in a group, which means aligning with other voices, harmonizing, and listening to one another. During our vocal workshops, we emphasize the social function of singing and its positive effects on physical and mental health.
Program
Each session begins with a warm-up, including body relaxation and activation, breathing exercises, and voice-strengthening techniques. We then move on to learning melodies by ear. We focus on traditional techniques, also referred to as “white singing” or “natural singing.” With each song, we also explore the cultural context in which it is or was performed. Regular workshops help participants gradually build vocal awareness, expand their musical repertoire, and develop their listening skills. In the beginner group, we teach the basics of voice emission, traditional singing techniques, and harmonizing.
